Malto Transcribed Speech Corpus Masato Kobayashi, Linguistics Department, University of Tokyo 12 Feb. 2012 Contents: 1. About the Corpus 2. Transcript Files 3. Speaker Profile 4. Village Names and Dialect Groups: 5. Glossing Rules 6. Notes on Transcription 1. About the Corpus This corpus consists of speech files of Malto narratives recorded by Masato Kobayashi (University of Tokyo) and Bablu Tirkey (Ranchi University) from 2005 to 2009. The recording was conducted outdoors, with a Sony Hi-MD Walkman and Audio-Technica monaural microphone. The transcripts of the recordings 01 to 35, and the glossary, are included in the book, _Texts and Grammar of Malto_, by Masato Kobayashi, Vizianagaram: Kotoba Books (in press). The book also contains a grammar. Transcripts 01 to 31 and 37 to 42 are glossed and translated. Transcripts 32 to 36 contain translation only. The folder "untranscribed" contains audio files of 12 untranscribed recordings. When transcribing and translating, I asked the speakers to listen to the original recording and tell it in Malto and Hindi again, sentence by sentence. Contact the author if you need recordings of those interviews. 2. Notes on Transcription Usually, there is no contrast in vowel length in non-initial syllables. When a vowel in the second syllable sounds long, I wrote a long vowel, so no consistent distinction is made about the length of non-initial syllables.
