Machine: SGI 4D/35 with 128 Mbytes of memory, OS IRIX 4.0.1. ; ; [CMU] Physical environment at CMU --------------------------- All sessions take place in a small enclosure located within a larger public lab. The space contains a table with two monitors, a NextDimension color monitor and a Megapixel monochrome display. The subject faces the color monitor and can look to the side at the monochrome display (where scenarios will appear). The experimenter sits in a carrel about 20ft away. Communication is by voice (ie, the subject can yell for the experimenter if assistance is needed). There are several workstations in the room as well as noticable air-conditioning noise. The enclosure is next to the door, which opens on a public corridor. ; ; [MIT] Description of Data Collection Environment at MIT The data were collected in an office environment where the ambient noise level is approximately 50dB on the A scale of a sound-level meter. The subject sat in front of a Sun workstation and wore a Sennheiser HMD-410 noise-cancelling microphone. In addition, a Crown PCC-160 phase coherent cardioid desk-top microphone was placed in front of the subject and data were collecting using both microphones. A Dectalk box (Version 2.0) was placed to the right of the subject and used to speak the paraphrased utterance that accom- panies the MIT table displays. A more detailed description of the recording mechanism and displays to user can be found in the subject instructions. ; ; [SRI] Environment: Subjects were seated in a comfortable chair at a desk in a small and quiet office. On top of the desk were the computer console and mouse; the keyboard is not used for the SRI SLS and was placed out of the way at the back of the desk. In addition, on the desk were 2 pre-amps, the Sennheiser microphone, the Crown microphone, the subject crib sheet, a notepad and pens, and the particular scenario at hand. The room was windowless, with no materials on the walls other than a calendar. The door to the room was kept closed, and the phone disconnected, during the solving of the four scenarios. The experimenter monitored the experiment from a room adjacent to the subject's room. ;
