This is the only exception to speakers never appearing twice in credit card conversations. Dialects: The dialect "areas" that categorize speakers constitute a broad-brush, a priori categorization of them into the major continental U.S. dialects, based on where they grew up. The categories correspond to delimited geographic areas except the "mixed" (or "Army brat") category, used for speakers who moved from location to location as they grew up. The geographical divisions, originally made to support the design of the TIMIT speech corpus, are based on a study of the linguistic dialectology literature. All except "Western" correspond to well-known dialect areas. Because relatively little is known about different geographic dialects in the Western part of the U.S.A., they were lumped together into the catch-all category called "Western", which is really a synonym for "Terra Incognita" rather than a scientifically valid dialect area delimited by isoglosses. The geographic areas are defined by lines drawn on a map at Texas Instruments, a copy of which will be included in the documentation being prepared to accompany the TIMIT speech corpus (as a separate package, NTIS Order No. PB91-100354). Note that a subject's speech may not, in fact, show the regional characteristics typical of the locality where he or she grew up; the categories were originally designed to be used before a subject's speech had been studied.
