;
;BBN scenarios:
;
[BBN-A1]
Plan the travel arrangements for a small family reunion.
The reunion will be held in Baltimore. Three family members
will be attending the meeting:

One of them, who typifies the ``high class'' life style, will
be coming from Denver; find first-class travel arrangements for
her on United Airlines.

The second has a life style described as ``economy''; find
travel arrangements from Dallas to Baltimore for the least
amount of money possible.

The third has an ``adventurous'' life style (he loves to hang glide
fly in small airplanes) and he lives in Pittsburgh. To make this
person's trip enjoyable, find a flight from Pittsburgh to Baltimore
on a plane that can hold the smallest number of passengers.

You will also need to specify the date of arrival for each of these
family members.
;
[BBN-A2]
You live in Philadelphia. You need to make a business
trip to San Francisco next week. You have an old friend in
Dallas and you'd therefore like to spend the afternoon in
Dallas on your way out to San Francisco. You'd prefer to fly
first class on American. Find out what kind of aircraft you'll
be flying on.
;
[BBN-A3]
Choose two cities: City A _________________, City B ___________________.

You live in city A. You want to combine a business trip
to city B with pleasure by taking your spouse along. You will
receive a fixed travel allowance, based on a first-class
ticket. Plan a trip that will allow you to stretch the travel
allowance to cover the expenses for both you and your spouse.
;
[BBN-A4]
A4: Choose three cities: City A _________________, City B __________________,
                         City C _________________.

You live in city A. You have only three days for job
hunting and have arranged two job interviews in cities B and C,
each lasting at least three hours. Pick the cities and plan
the flight itinerary.
;
[BBN-B5]
You have heard in a commercial that one airline claims to
have more flights with some particular class (you can't
remember whether it is business class, or first class, or some
other class) than all other airlines combined. You also forgot
which airline made that claim. Find out which airline, if any,
can reasonably make such a claim, and which class the claim was
about.
;
[BBN-B6]
An airline has a ``hub'' in a city if it has a lot more
flights into and out of that city than other airlines do.
Determine whether any of the airlines represented in the
database have hubs, and, if so, which cities are hubs for which
airlines. (You may stop with one airline and one hub, if you
wish.)
;
[BBN-B7]
Pick an airline and pretend that you are in charge of
suggesting new routes and schedule changes for that airline.
Investigate the database to determine whether there is a gap
that your airline could fill. A gap could be a route between
two cities that you don't currently serve, or it could be a
part of the day that isn't covered by you (or your competition)
for travel between cities you already serve.
;
[BBN-B8]
Two airlines might be suspected of being in collusion if
they appear to have divided up territory (or time of day in a
single city) so as not to compete with one another, or if they
have nearly identical prices for the same service. Pick any
two airlines, and determine whether they might be colluding.
;
[BBN-B9]
Choose a city ________ and a period of time during the day ________.

Suppose that the airport in this city has closed for that period of
time due to minor construction work. Of the airlines that use this
airport, find the airline that will be least affected by the airport
closing. Also, find out what is the maximum possible number of
passengers that might be affected (based on the seating capacity of
the types of aircraft used in those flights).
;
[BBN-B10]
Choose an airport: ________________.

The ``congestion period'' in an airport is that 3-hour period in
which there are more take-offs and landings than in any other 3-hour
period of the day. For the airport you have chosen, determine its
congestion period.
;
[BBN-B11]
Choose one city from each of the following pairs of cities:
Boston/Washington DC; Denver/San Francisco.

Find an airline which provides only direct flights between the two
chosen cities. Also, is there an airline that provides only connecting
flights between the same two cities? If so, determine the types of
aircraft used on those flights.
;
[BBN-B12]
Choose one of the following cities: Atlanta, Denver, Dallas.

Suppose that due to bad weather the airport in this city will be
closed for the morning. Find all the flights that make a connection
in this airport and that will be affected. Find other similar (same
origin and final destination) afternoon flights that connect through
the same airport.
;
[BBN-B13]
Choose two cities A _________ and B _________. Choose any three
airlines that fly from city A to city B.

You have always been curious as to the price differences among the
various airlines. Perform some research on price comparisons for the
three selected airlines, studying flights from city A to city B with
similar characteristics (same class of service, similar departure
time, etc). In your opinion, which airline is the most ``greedy'' and
which is the least ``greedy'' among the three airlines.
;
[BBN-B14]
B14:  Choose an airport: ________________.

An airline dominates a time slot in an airport if that airline has
more takeoffs and landings in that airport during that time slot than
any other airline. A business time slot is early morning or evening.
Does any airline dominate the business time slots?
;
[BBN-B15]
An airline is ``dependent'' on a manufacturer if most of the flights
on that airline use planes from that manufacturer. Are any airlines
``dependent'' on a manufacturer?
;
[BBN-B16]
Which types of aircraft are used for transcontinental (east coast to
west coast) flights? Are any of these types of aircraft used for
flights which are not legs of transcontinental flights?
;
[BBN-B17]
An airline cuts cost on a route if it serves only a snack to coach
passengers when it serves a full meal to first class passengers. Pick
two airlines and find out if there is a route on which they cut cost
in that manner.
;
[BBN-C1]
Find the cheapest (or the most expensive) one-way fare from one city
to another.
;
[BBN-C2]
Find the earliest (or latest) flight from one city to another that
serves a meal of your choice.
;
[BBN-C3]
Determine the type of aircraft used on a flight from one city to
another that leaves before (or after) a certain time of the day.
;
[BBN-C4]
Find a trans-continental flight on your favorite airline from one city
another that makes a stop-over in a city of your choice.
;
[BBN-C5]
Determine the longest day trip you can make between two cities of your
choice. (you are trying to maximize the amount of time on the ground at
your destination)
;
[BBN-C6]
Write down your usual dinner time: ____________

Find a flight between two cities. The flight should leave in the
afternoon and arrive around dinner time. It should be a non-stop flight.
;
;
;CMU scenarios:
;Note: July8, 1991 - script CMU-35 had to be changed due to the
; database change that screwed up the flights.
;                    it is now CMU-37.

You are a member of the US Olympic ski team, and are traveling from
your home in Boston to Denver for a week-long practice session way
atop the mountains in Aspen. You must be in Aspen by Wednesday, and
you will want to arrive in Denver as early on the day as possible

sponsoring a major breakfast cereal after the Olympics are over. You
would prefer an afternoon flight in order to allow for the 4 to 5 hour
travel time between Aspen and Denver.

Then you will return to Boston.

You are a highly respected Nobel Laureate and have been asked to speak
at the MIT graduation exercise. The cost of the trip, however, has
been left up to you.

Remembering that the cost of this trip is a factor, find a flight from
Pittsburgh to Boston on Wednesday of next week. You would prefer to
travel to and from Boston on the same day, keeping in mind that the
graduation is scheduled to begin at 1pm, and will probably not end
until around 5pm. It will also take you some time to travel to and
from the airport.
;
[CMU-42]
You are an avid backpacker who lives in Philadelphia. You are planning
a vacation to Rocky Mountain National Park for your family. You will
fly into Denver airport, and rent a car there. You would like to fly
out on a Sunday and return on a Saturday. Remember that you do not
like to get up very early in the morning, so take that into
consideration when planning your flights.
;
[CMU-43]
Congratulations, you have just been voted Salesperson of the Year! You
will fly from your home in Philadelphia to Dallas to accept a trophy
and to make a speech. The ceremony begins at 4pm on Saturday, and
takes place at a downtown hotel.

In keeping with your strict work ethic, you decide to take advantage
of the free airline ticket to stop off in some other city on Monday to
see if you can make a few sales contacts there. You're able to choose
any city.

You will return to Philadelphia on Wednesday. You would like as early
a flight as possible, so that you will still have the better part of
the day to SELL!!!

You are an avid baseball fan, and have won a contest to follow your
favorite team, the Pirates, on a grueling road trip that will cover
four cities. Your airfare will be paid for, so live it up!! The
contest promoters are not legally able to provide you with information
about the exact flights that the players will be on, but they can give
you some very good hints so that you can travel with the team as well.

1) Your first travel segment will take you from Pittsburgh to Atlanta
on Wednesday. The promoter has told you that the team will be on the
morning flight that serves breakfast (the owners like to save a buck
whenever possible).

2) Then on Thursday, it is on from Atlanta to Oakland, California for
an evening game. The game starts at 7pm, so the team will have to be
in the city in time to make the game, and remember that hint about the
meals.

3) You now will travel to Philadelphia to see the Pirates play the
Phillies on the following Saturday.

4) After that tremendous win over the Phillies, the Pirates will
travel from Philadelphia to Boston for a game on Monday. The
promoters know that the team will travel on a morning flight with a
meal. They have also noted that while the owner loves to be frugal,
he will only fly his team on well-known airlines.

6) Finally you will head home to Pittsburgh from Boston on Wednesday
evening. By this time, you are sick of baseball, particularly Pirate
Baseball, so take the flight of your choice. Perhaps you should have
gone to Disney World...

the flight and ground transportation itinerary to Pittsburgh and
Denver. You will want to eat on the plane, if you can. Good luck!
;
[SRI-2]
You want to combine next summer's business trip with pleasure by
taking your spouse along. The trip is from San Francisco to Boston.
From your employer you will receive a fixed travel allotment for your
travel expenses only. This allotment is based on the cost of a first
class ticket. How can you stretch the travel allowance to cover
travel expenses for two? Do whatever is necessary for cost
containment.
;
[SRI-3]
You live about two hours from Philadelphia, and your family is coming
to visit. So that you can pick them all up at the same time and drive
the two hours only once, find flights for them that arrive within 15
minutes of each other. The family members are coming from Denver,
Dallas, and San Francisco. After you have found the flights, check to
make sure that the round trip fare for each is less than $1000.
;
[SRI-4]
You are traveling from Denver to Washington, and you can't decide on
which of two days to travel. You can either leave after work on
Wednesday or very early on Thursday morning. Find the latest flight

choose one of them. Take into account factors like rush hour, whether
a meal is offered, and price.
;
[SRI-5]
You are planning a family vacation to San Francisco, and you would like to
be on the same plane as your grandfather, who doesn't like traveling alone.
Arrange to fly from Philadelphia (your home town) to San Francisco on a flight
that stops in Dallas (your grandfather's home). You happen to know that he
hates flying on Delta, but will do so if the price is substantially
cheaper (for him).
;
[SRI-6]
You are planning a budget vacation from your native San Francisco to the
East Coast. You have friends to visit in Boston, Philadelphia, and
Baltimore, and plan to use ground transportation between those cities
once you fly east. Find out which of these three cities would be cheapest
to fly into, and then choose a departing flight. You want to leave on a
Saturday. Keep in mind that you are enrolled in the frequent flier programs
for Delta and United, but you will prefer one of these airlines only if
the price is the same.
