PANEL HOUSE TABLE FORMAT The file "panlhous.tbl" in the "tables" directory provides full demographic information on each of the callers selected by the marketing firm NFO Research, Inc. This information is drawn from the standard questionnaire form distributed by NFO to establish a sampling population. Each entry is 90 characters wide, and contains 50 distinct, fixed-width data fields. There are no explicit separators between fields; space characters represent (portions of) fields that have been left blank. The first field of the table (the "Membership or sequence number" in the first 7 columns) corresponds to the "panel_number" field in the NIST SPHERE header of each waveform file. The assignment of character positions to data fields is as follows. The interpretations for the codes used in various fields are given afterwards. On inspection of the actual content of the Panel House Table delivered to us by NFO (and presented here in "panlhous.tbl"), we have discovered two discrepencies (others may exist). First, columns 75-79 of the table often contain a 3-digit code (but not always); we have no explanation for the meaning of these digits, because the information above lists these columns as "blank". Second, the "Lifestage" field is either not present or not in the position shown above -- column 80 of the table is consistently blank. ----- State Codes 01 AL Alabama 04 AZ Arizona 05 AR Arkansas 06 CA California 08 CO Colorado 09 CT Connecticut 10 DE Delaware 11 DC Dist. of Columbia 12 FL Florida 13 GA Georgia 16 ID Idaho 17 IL Illinois 18 IN Indiana 19 IA Iowa 20 KS Kansas 21 KY Kentucky 22 LA Louisiana 23 ME Maine 24 MD Maryland 25 MA Massachusetts 26 MI Michigan 27 MN Minnesota 28 MS Missippi 29 MO Missouri 30 MT Montana 31 NE Nebraska 32 NV Nevada 33 NH New Hampshire 34 NJ New Jersey 35 NM New Mexico 36 NY New York 37 NC North Carolina 38 ND North Dakota 39 OH Ohio 40 OK Oklahoma 41 OR Oregon 42 PA Pennsylvania 44 RI Rhode Island 45 SC South Carolina 46 SD South Dakota 47 TN Tennessee 48 TX Texas 49 UT Utah 50 VT Vermont 51 VA Virginia 53 WA Washington 54 WV West Virginia 55 WI Wisconsin 56 WY Wyoming Education Codes 1 - Grade School 2 - Some High School 3 - Graduated High School 4 - Some College - no degree 5 - Graduated College - Associate's degree (2 year) 6 - Graduated College - Bachelor's degree (4 year) 7 - Post Graduate Degree - MS, MA, MBA, MD, DVM, PhD, DDS, etc. 0 - no answer blank - person not present in household Employment Codes 1 - Full-time 2 - Part-time 3 - Retired 4 - Not Employed 0 - no answer blank - person not present in household Designation Codes 1 - Husband & wife 2 - Male (no wife), child and/or other relative present 3 - Female (no husband), child and/or other relative present 4 - Male living alone 5 - Female living alone 6 - Male living with non-relative 7 - Female living with non-relative Occupation Codes 1 - managerial, professional 2 - technical, sales, administrative support 3 - service 4 - farming, forestry, fishing 5 - craftsman, repairman 6 - operator, laborer 7 - retired, student, armed forces, other, no answer blank - person not present in household Income Codes (in thousands of dollars) 01 under 7.5 02 7.5 - 10 03 10 - 12.5 04 12.5 - 15 05 15 - 17.5 06 17.5 - 20 07 20 - 22.5 08 22.5 - 25 09 25 - 27.5 10 27.5 - 30 11 30 - 32.5 12 32.5 - 35 13 35 - 37.5 14 37.5 - 40 15 40 - 45 16 45 - 50 17 50 - 60 18 60 - 75 19 75 - 85 20 85 - 100 21 100 - 125 22 125 - 150 23 150 - 175 24 more than 175 Residence Codes 1 - house 2 - apartment 3 - mobile home 4 - condominium 5 - twinplex/duplex 6 - other 0 - no answer Geographic Codes 1 New England 2 Middle Atlantic 3 East North Central 4 West North Central 5 South Atlantic 6 East South Central 7 West South Central 8 Mountain 9 Pacific Household Age Codes (codes 1-5 are for "Family (Female, if present)", codes 6-9 are for "Nonfamily") 1 under 30 2 30 - 39 3 40 - 49 4 50 - 59 5 60 and over 6 Male under 35 7 Male 35 and over 8 Female under 35 9 Female 35 and over Relation Codes 1 male child 2 female child 3 male other relative 4 female other relative 5 male not related 6 female not related Lifestage Codes 1 Yound Singles - 1 person, under 35 2 Middle Singles - 1 person, 35 to 65 3 Older Singles - 1 person, over 65 4 Young Couple - 2 or more adults under 45, no children 5 Working Older Couple - head over 45, employed, no children 6 Retired Older Couple - head over 45, not employed, no children 7 Young Parent - head under 45, youngest child under 6 8 Middle Parent - head under 45, youngest child 6+ 9 Older Parent - head over 45, child at home - any age 0 Roommates
